Raptor
Our verdict
The regular Ranger is a sensible midsize 4x4 with a proper two-speed transfer case, an optional rear locker and a 7,500-lb tow rating. The Raptor is the one to get excited about, with long-travel FOX suspension, lockers front and rear and 405 hp, but it gives up towing and costs close to full-size money. If you want rock-crawling hardware at a lower price, wait and see what the 2027 Tremor brings.
Best for
Buyers who want a midsize 4x4 that can tow 7,500 lb, or a factory desert runner with lockers at both ends in the Raptor.
Skip it if
You need an extended cab or a longer bed, or you want crawler-grade hardware without paying Raptor money before the 2027 Tremor shows up.

Off-road hardware
4WD / AWD system
XL, XLT and Lariat are rear-drive as standard, with optional part-time 4x4 using an electronic shift-on-the-fly, two-speed planetary transfer case (2H/4H/4L) and a 2.72:1 low range. There's no automatic 4A mode on these trims. The Raptor gets Ford's Advanced 4x4 system: a two-speed transfer case with automatic on-demand engagement (a 4A mode you can leave on across mixed surfaces), a published 3.06:1 low range and a published 67.88:1 maximum crawl ratio.

The off-road trims
FX4 Off-Road Package (XL, XLT, Lariat 4x4)
Adds the rear e-locker, off-road-tuned shocks, steel skid plates, Trail Control and extra terrain modes; offered on the XL for the first time in 2026.
Raptor
405-hp 3.0L twin-turbo V6, 2.5-in FOX Live Valve internal-bypass shocks, front and rear e-lockers, LT285/70R17 all-terrain tires, Baja mode and 10.7 in of ground clearance.
Tremor (2027 model, not yet on sale)
Ford confirmed a North American Ranger Tremor in January 2026 for a late-2026 debut; prototypes show the 2.7L V6, remote-reservoir dampers and 17-in all-terrain tires, but Ford hasn't released specs.
What's new for 2026
The FX4 Off-Road Package is now offered on the XL, plus the new Avalanche paint, two 17-in wheel designs and a power moonroof option due in spring 2026. Ford has confirmed a Ranger Tremor for 2027.
