Our verdict
The R1T is one of the most trail-capable electric pickups: plenty of clearance, a steep approach angle and a 43.1-inch fording rating, with the Quad-Motor's per-wheel control standing in for lockers. It's a midsize truck with a small bed, though, and the price climbs quickly past the Dual models.
Best for
Overlanders and outdoor types who want a quick, quiet EV that handles real trails and deep water, and don't need a big bed.
Skip it if
You haul long loads or tow heavy over long distances, where the short bed and towing range will pinch.
Strengths
- Rated to ford 43.1 inches of water
- Up to 14.6 inches of air-adjustable clearance and a 35.7-degree approach angle
- Quad-Motor gives per-wheel torque control
- Up to 420 miles of EPA range (Dual with Max battery)
- 11.7-cu-ft Gear Tunnel adds storage a regular truck doesn't have
Weak spots
- Short 4.5-ft bed
- No low range or mechanical lockers
- The 11,000-lb tow rating requires a weight-distributing hitch; Rivian lists 5,000 lb without one
- Tri and Quad start above $100,000
Capability vs other electric trucks
- Cabs
- Crew Cab
- Bed lengths
- 4.5 ft
- Efficiency / range
- EPA-estimated 258–420 mi of range (2026 R1T, varies by battery, motors and wheels); 67–87 MPGe combined
- EPA range
- Up to 420 mi
- Pricing notes
- 2026 R1T Dual Standard price on rivian.com (as listed in late 2025), excluding the $1,895 destination fee. Every R1T is all-wheel drive. Other 2026 starting prices: Dual (Large or Max battery) $77,990, Tri $100,990, Quad $115,990. Rivian now sells the 2027 R1T, which starts at $79,990 (R1T Premium).
- Configurations
- Five-seat crew cab only, with a 4.5-ft (54.1-in) bed and an 11.7-cu-ft pass-through Gear Tunnel between cab and bed.
Off-road hardware
4WD / AWD system
Electric all-wheel drive in three motor layouts, with no transfer case and no low range. Dual-Motor: one motor per axle. Tri-Motor: one front motor and two rear motors, so the rear axle can split torque side to side. Quad-Motor: one motor per wheel, giving individual wheel torque control. Rock Crawl mode is tuned for slow climbing (Rivian cites a 100% grade with over 14 inches of clearance). Adaptive air suspension offers more than 5.5 inches of height adjustment, and an electro-hydraulic roll-control system stiffens on pavement and softens off-road for articulation.
Locking differentials
No mechanical locking differentials are offered. Dual-Motor trucks rely on electronic traction control across each axle; the Tri-Motor's twin rear motors can split torque across the rear axle; the Quad-Motor controls each wheel independently, which covers much of what lockers do.

Dual (Max battery)
Longest range (EPA up to 420 mi) with up to 665 hp and the same air suspension and 14.6-inch max clearance as other R1Ts.
Tri
850 hp with twin rear motors that can vector torque across the rear axle.

1,025 hp and one motor per wheel for individual wheel torque control; 1,198 lb-ft.
All-Terrain configurations
EPA lists 'All-Terrain' R1T versions on 20-inch all-terrain tires for Dual Large, Dual Max and Tri Max.
What's new for 2026
