TRD Pro Double Cab
Our verdict
The Tacoma covers every kind of off-road buyer with a two-speed transfer case and a rear locker on TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter. The TRD Off-Road is the value pick and the only one you can get with a stick; the TRD Pro and Trailhunter add serious suspension and the hybrid's torque but carry price tags near $65,000. The missing front locker and the hybrid's middling mileage are the main complaints.
Best for
Midsize buyers who want a factory-warrantied off-road truck with a rear locker and a real low range, from a TRD Off-Road up to the Trailhunter for long-distance overland builds.
Skip it if
You want a front locker, which no Tacoma offers, or you balk at paying mid-$60,000s for the hybrid TRD Pro and Trailhunter.

- Current Edmunds-listed MSRPs excluding destination: SR XtraCab 4x2 $32,545; SR XtraCab 4x4 $35,745 (the cheapest 4x4, with the 228-hp engine). Toyota's November 2025 launch prices were $32,145 and $35,345; Toyota has raised prices during the model year. TRD Off-Road 4x4 starts at $42,815 (manual), Trailhunter at $63,750 and TRD Pro at $64,750.

- XtraCab (SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner; 6-ft bed) or Double Cab (5- or 6-ft bed depending on trim). TRD Pro is Double Cab 5-ft only; Trailhunter offers 5- or 6-ft beds.
Off-road hardware
4WD / AWD system
Most 4x4 Tacomas use part-time 4WD with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case (2H/4H/4L), plus A-TRAC brake-based traction control and an automatic limited-slip function. The Limited gets full-time 4WD with a locking center differential. Toyota doesn't publish the 4-Low ratio.
Locking differentials
Electronic locking rear differential standard on TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter (and on the 2WD TRD PreRunner). No front locker on any Tacoma. The Limited's full-time system has a locking center differential. Other 4x4s rely on A-TRAC and an automatic limited-slip function.

The off-road trims
TRD Off-Road
Standard 4x4 with a rear e-locker; front sway-bar disconnect is available, and it's the only off-road trim offered with the 6-speed manual.
TRD Pro
i-FORCE MAX hybrid with FOX QS3 three-way adjustable internal-bypass shocks with rear piggyback reservoirs, lifted and wider stance, 33-in Goodyear tires on 18-in wheels, rear e-locker, sway-bar disconnect and IsoDynamic Performance seats.
Trailhunter
i-FORCE MAX hybrid with Old Man Emu 2.5-in forged monotube shocks with rear piggyback reservoirs, 33-in Goodyear rugged-terrain tires on 18-in wheels, ARB steel rear bumper with recovery points, rock rails, high-mount air intake, rear e-locker and sway-bar disconnect.
What's new for 2026
Small changes: black front logos on TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road; 18-in TRD wheels with 32-in Goodyear all-terrain tires on the TRD Off-Road i-FORCE Premium Package; a standard tow hitch on SR XtraCab; new Heritage Blue paint and a TRD Pro-only Wave Maker color (dealers from March 2026).
