Best 4×4 Trucks of 2026: Our Picks for Every Kind of Driver

The best 4x4 pickup depends on the job. Here are our 2026 picks for trails, rocks, desert, towing, daily driving, value and electric, built from our sourced spec database.

The short version

  • Best overall: Ford F-150, for its range of 4x4 trims from FX4 to Raptor R and up to 13,500 lb of towing.
  • Best midsize off-roader: Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, with front and rear lockers and DSSV dampers for about $50,700.
  • Best rock crawler: Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, thanks to a 4:1 low range, two lockers and a sway-bar disconnect.
  • For 2026, the Silverado ZR2 and Sierra AT4X are the only gas or diesel half-tons with factory front and rear lockers.
  • Several big redesigns arrive for 2027, so check timing before buying a Silverado, Sierra, F-150 or Colorado.

There's no single best 4x4 truck. There's a best truck for rock trails, a different one for towing a 12,000-pound camper, and a third one for the person who needs to park in a city garage all week and still wants a real low range on Saturday. So instead of one winner, here are our picks by job, pulled from the specs in our 2026 truck database, where every number links back to its source.

Prices below are starting MSRPs before destination for the trim we name, as published in September 2026. Manufacturers have raised prices during the model year, so treat them as a guide and check the build-and-price tool before you shop.

Best overall: Ford F-150

The F-150 wins because it's the widest net in the class. You can buy a work-truck XL, add the FX4 package and an optional rear e-locker to an XLT, step up to the Tremor with 33-inch all-terrains and long-travel front suspension, or go all the way to the Raptor and 720-hp Raptor R. Few trucks cover that much ground under one badge.

It also tows. Ford lists up to 13,500 lb for the right configuration, and the 430-hp PowerBoost hybrid doubles as a generator on a job site or at camp. The catch is that Ford's 2026 equipment lists show only a rear locker on the Tremor and Raptor, so if you want front-and-rear lockers in a full-size truck, look at GM.

Worth knowing before you buy

Ford has already detailed the 2027 F-150: a 3.0L EcoBoost replaces the 2.7L, the 5.0L V8 returns to King Ranch and Platinum, and cheaper entry-level Tremor and Raptor versions are on the way. If you're shopping a Tremor or Raptor, it may pay to wait for 2027 pricing.

Best midsize off-roader: Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

Nothing else in the midsize class puts this much hardware on a truck for about $50,000. The ZR2 gets a 3-inch lift, selectable front and rear electronic lockers, Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, 33-inch mud-terrains, full skid plates and rocker protection. That's the same damper technology GM uses on its most expensive off-road trucks.

Add the ZR2 Bison package and you get AEV bumpers, boron-steel skid plates and 35-inch tires, with 12.2 inches of clearance and a 38.2-degree approach angle. The 2.7L TurboMax makes 310 hp and 430 lb-ft, and GM has announced a 350-hp version for 2027. The GMC Canyon AT4X is the same truck with a nicer cabin and a higher price.

Pros

  • Front and rear lockers standard on ZR2
  • DSSV dampers soak up washboard at speed
  • Bison package adds 35s and boron-steel skids

Cons

  • One engine choice
  • Bison package pushes it past $60,000
  • Mud-terrains are loud on the highway

Best rock crawler: Jeep Gladiator Rubicon

If your weekends involve ledges and boulder fields, the Gladiator Rubicon is the most purpose-built pickup you can buy. It has a 4.0:1 Rock-Trac transfer case, Tru-Lok lockers front and rear on Dana 44 axles, an electronic front sway-bar disconnect and a solid front axle that articulates better than any independent setup. Its 43.4-degree approach angle is the best of any gas or diesel pickup in our database.

The weakness is length. With a pickup bed hanging off a Wrangler, the Rubicon's breakover angle is only 20.3 degrees, so long crests will find the belly. The 285-hp Pentastar V6 is the only engine, and it's more adequate than inspiring with a load. Read what those three angles mean before you decide wheelbase doesn't matter to you.

Best midsize all-rounder: Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma has the deepest menu of factory off-road trims in the midsize class. The TRD Off-Road is the value pick: a rear e-locker, an available front sway-bar disconnect and the only manual transmission left in the midsize class. The TRD Pro adds FOX QS3 internal-bypass shocks for faster terrain, and the Trailhunter goes after overlanders with Old Man Emu shocks and an ARB steel rear bumper.

Both flagships use the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, rated at 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. Expect to pay more than $63,000 for either. The bigger complaints are that no Tacoma offers a front locker and the hybrid only manages 23 mpg combined in 4x4 form. Still, for a truck you'll drive every day and wheel on weekends, it's hard to fault. If you're planning a long-distance build, start with our overlanding build plan.

Best high-speed desert truck: Ford Ranger Raptor

The Ranger Raptor is the midsize truck for people who drive dirt roads fast. A 405-hp twin-turbo V6, 2.5-inch FOX Live Valve internal-bypass shocks, front and rear e-lockers and 10.7 inches of clearance make it the most serious factory desert truck under $60,000. Ford's published 3.06:1 low range also makes it a better slow-speed crawler than you might expect.

If you need a full-size bed and more towing, the F-150 Raptor uses the same formula with a 450-hp high-output V6, a coil-sprung five-link rear and 35-inch tires. Just budget for it: the F-150 Raptor starts at $79,005.

Pick the truck for the trail you actually drive, not the one in the commercial.

Best full-size trail truck: Chevrolet Silverado ZR2

For 2026, GM's twins are the only gas or diesel half-tons with factory front and rear lockers. The Silverado ZR2 pairs them with Multimatic DSSV dampers, a 2-inch lift, 33-inch mud-terrains and a 33.5-degree approach angle. The GMC Sierra AT4X has the same hardware and adds an AEV steel front bumper with winch capability. The ZR2 starts at $71,800 and the AT4X at $79,600.

Timing matters here. The 2026 Silverado and Sierra are the last of their generation, and the redesigned 2027 trucks, with new V8s and a ZR2 that moves to 35-inch tires with the diesel standard, go on sale late in 2026. A leftover 2026 ZR2 could be a smart deal, or you may want the new one.

Lockers matter more than lift

A truck with front and rear lockers on 33s will often go where an open-diff truck on 35s can't. Our guide to locking differentials explains why.

Best daily-driver full-size: Ram 1500

If most of your miles are pavement, the Ram 1500 is our favorite half-ton to live with. Its coil-spring five-link rear suspension rides well empty, air suspension is available, and the cabin sets the bar for the class. For 2026 the 5.7L HEMI V8 is back alongside the 420-hp and 540-hp Hurricane inline-sixes.

It isn't soft off-road, either. The Warlock, Rebel and RHO all come with a rear e-locker, and the 540-hp RHO adds Bilstein Blackhawk active dampers, 35-inch tires and a much wider track for high-speed desert work. Ram's max tow rating of 11,610 lb is for 4x2 trucks, so check the towing chart for the 4x4 configuration you want.

Best heavy-duty off-roader: Ram 2500 Power Wagon

The Power Wagon is still the most trail-ready heavy-duty pickup you can buy from a dealer. It has electronic front and rear lockers, a disconnecting front sway bar, a Warn 12,000-lb winch, 4.10 gears, skid plates and 14.2 inches of ground clearance. For 2026 it's powered by the 405-hp 6.4L HEMI.

Ram has also announced a Cummins-powered Power Wagon as a 2027 model, due in the second half of 2026. If you tow heavy and wheel hard, that's the one to watch. The Super Duty Tremor and Silverado HD ZR2 are strong rivals, though both have only a rear locker.

Best for heavy towing: Ford Super Duty

Ford lists up to 38,000 lb of towing and 8,000 lb of payload for the F-250/F-350 lineup, the highest figures in our database. The 6.7L High Output Power Stroke makes 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft, and the Tremor package adds 35-inch tires and off-road suspension for ranch roads and boat ramps. Ram's HD (up to 36,610 lb) and GM's Silverado HD and Sierra HD (up to 36,000 lb) are right behind.

Those headline numbers belong to one specific configuration, usually a dually with a gooseneck. Before you buy for a trailer, run your real numbers through the towing and payload calculator and read how towing ratings work.

Best hybrid 4x4: Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX

The Tundra's hybrid V6 makes 437 hp and 583 lb-ft, the most torque of any half-ton hybrid. In TRD Pro form it adds 2.5-inch FOX internal-bypass shocks, a 1.1-inch front lift and a rear e-locker. Ford's 430-hp F-150 PowerBoost is the other strong choice, and it's the better pick if you want onboard generator power at camp.

Want the trade-offs between hybrid, diesel and electric for trail use? Our powertrain guide lays them out.

Best value 4x4: Nissan Frontier

The Frontier is easy to overlook, and that's a mistake if you're on a budget. Every one gets a 310-hp 3.8L V6 and a nine-speed automatic, and the 4x4 models have a real part-time system with a published 2.717:1 low range. The S King Cab 4x4 starts at $35,150. The PRO-4X Crew Cab, from $41,870, adds Bilstein off-road shocks, skid plates and a rear e-locker.

It's an older design with less clearance than the newest rivals, 9.5 inches on the PRO-4X, but it's simple and strong, and it undercuts comparably equipped competitors by thousands.

Best electric 4x4: Rivian R1T

The R1T is the most trail-capable electric pickup on sale. Its air suspension raises it to 14.6 inches of clearance, Rivian rates it for 43.1 inches of wading depth, and the Quad-Motor version controls each wheel independently, which covers much of what lockers do. It tows up to 11,000 lb, although range drops sharply when you do.

Charging is the real limit off-road. Plan remote trips around chargers, or look at the range-extended trucks due in 2027. The GMC Hummer EV and Tesla Cybertruck are the other serious electric options.

Honorable mention: Ford Maverick Tremor

The Maverick isn't a traditional 4x4, since it's a unibody truck with no low range, but the Tremor trim is more capable than it looks. It adds a Rear Drive Unit Lock that locks the twin-clutch rear drive unit, off-road suspension, all-terrain tires, skid plates and 9.1 inches of clearance, from $40,645. For forest roads, beach access and snowy driveways, it's plenty. Read 4WD vs AWD to understand what you give up.

How we chose

We started with the hardware that decides what a truck can do off pavement: low range, lockers, suspension, clearance and angles. Then we weighed towing and payload, price, and how livable each truck is day to day. Every spec comes from our database, where each truck page lists the manufacturer and third-party sources we checked and the date we checked them. When a number wasn't published, we left it out rather than estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best 4x4 truck for 2026?

It depends on the job. We pick the Ford F-150 as the best overall because it offers 4x4 trims from a basic FX4 to the Raptor R and tows up to 13,500 lb. For hard off-road use, the Colorado ZR2, Gladiator Rubicon and Silverado ZR2 stand out, and the Super Duty leads for heavy towing.

Which 2026 pickups have front and rear locking differentials?

Among gas and diesel trucks, the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, GMC Canyon AT4X, Chevrolet Silverado ZR2, GMC Sierra AT4X, Ford Ranger Raptor, Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and Ram 2500 Power Wagon offer front and rear lockers. Among electric trucks, the Tesla Cybertruck Premium AWD and the GMC Hummer EV with the Extreme Off-Road Package have front and rear locking differentials.

What is the best cheap 4x4 truck?

The Nissan Frontier is our value pick. Every Frontier has a 310-hp V6, and the S King Cab 4x4 starts at $35,150 before destination with a real part-time 4WD system and low range. The PRO-4X adds a rear locker and off-road shocks for a little over $41,000.

Is a midsize or full-size 4x4 better off-road?

Midsize trucks are usually easier on tight trails because they're narrower, shorter and turn tighter, and the best of them carry front and rear lockers. Full-size trucks tow and haul far more and ride better on long highway stretches. Our midsize vs full-size guide compares them in detail.

Should I wait for a 2027 truck?

Possibly. The Silverado and Sierra 1500 are redesigned for 2027 and go on sale late 2026, the Colorado and Canyon get a stronger engine, and Ford has announced 2027 F-150 changes including cheaper Tremor and Raptor versions. If one of those is on your list, compare 2026 discounts against the new model before buying.
